A team of structural geologists from four of our offices won OZ Minerals’ Explorer Challenge Fusion Prize for their unique exploration solution combining machine learning with data- and expert-driven exploration targeting.
A team of eight structural geologists and data scientists from four of our offices were awarded the $25,000 Fusion Prize in OZ Minerals’ 2019 Explorer Challenge. Their unique solution combines machine learning with data- and expert-driven exploration targeting techniques.
The three-month global challenge set participants on a journey of discovery to predict mineralization locations in OZ Minerals’ Mount Woods project area. Over a thousand participants from sixty-two countries scrutinized more than six terabytes of public and private exploration data covering Oz Minerals’ Mount Woods tenement package in northern South Australia.
In addition to receiving A$1 million in prizes, the winning models will be tested in real life, with the top targets scheduled for drilling by the end of 2019 in the hopes of discovering the next big mineral deposit in Australia.
The Fusion Prize acknowledges the best original way of using multiple data sources that are typically difficult to compare directly.
Our team’s approach included re-interpreting and adding value to the available data sets, then using a multi-pronged and integrated targeting method. We applied data-driven machine learning (based on a balanced random forest algorithm) and weights of evidence to guide our creation of a set of knowledge-driven fuzzy inference solutions using a mineralizing systems approach. Based on these, we identified three highly-ranked iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) targets and seven secondary targets to be tested by Oz Minerals.
“Winning the Fusion Prize is validation of a great collaborative effort by our global SRK team,” said Senior Structural Geologist Mark Rieuwers. “We based our work on solid geoscience and our extensive knowledge of mineralizing systems in the study region and combined it with cutting-edge cloud-computing machine learning as well as more traditional data science techniques.”
