In this project, Mopani Copper Mine contracted SRK Consulting to produce a consolidated environmental impact statement, to improve the client’s understanding of the baseline environment, potential risks and impacts of its Nkana and Mufulira mining operations. With a core team of two environmental scientists, the project involved a number of technical experts across disciplines. This included specialists in biodiversity, air quality, noise, social impact, rehabilitation and closure, geochemistry, soils and heritage – who undertook biophysical and socio-economic baseline studies and impact assessments. It also included geographical information system (GIS) mapping and alignment to the legislative framework.
Much of the cross-border work on this large-scale project was complicated by Covid-19 constraints and protocols, making it a challenging task to manage specialists and site visits. There was also a tight project timeline of six months that had to be met. These factors are vital to good communication and effective project management to coordinate a wide range of activities. This was underpinned by regular project meetings with the team to ensure that deliverables were achieved to meet the project timeline.
