Diamonds from Exploration to Manufacturing

Presented by a team of prominent local and international experts, including SRK's Herman Grutter, the course provides participants with exposure to the latest developments in diamond exploration, geophysics, kimberlite petrology and mineralogy, diamond formation, mantle indicators and fine diamond applications. It also covers the full ambit of primary and secondary diamond deposits, including evaluation, mining and exploitation, processing and diamond recovery from these deposits.

It is intended for fourth-year university students, diamond geology researchers, and industry professionals looking to update their knowledge.

Herman is leading the following sessions (June 20-24):

Session 4 - Kimberlite and Lamproites

  • Geology of Angolan kimberlites, and their diamond quality compared to other regional production

Session 5 - Mantle Indicators as Applied to Diamond Exploration

  • Mantle indicators 101 - which ones are used and for what purpose
  • Pyroxene geotherms and the lithospheric thermal state
  • Cr-pyrope garnets re-purposed as lithosphere proxies
  • Examples of current use and interpretation of indicator mineral data sets

Session 6 - Microdiamond/Macrodiamond Relationships

  • Benchmarked macrodiamond grade estimates using microdiamond data
