Utilization of Remote Sensing and Future Aspirations

SRK Consulting had the opportunity to present its vision on the transformative role of remote sensing in shaping the future of mineral exploration and mining in India, at the regional event “Leveraging Space Technology and Applications for Viksit Bharat 2047”, organized by the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Kolkata, India. SRK highlighted how space-borne technologies are becoming indispensable tools in modern mineral prospectivity workflows, particularly as mineral discovery becomes increasingly challenging day by day. Special emphasis was placed on the role of remote sensing for the exploration of critical minerals which are vital to achieving economic growth and national self-sufficiency. Additionally, SRK mentioned how remote sensing contributes to advancements in mine safety, environmental sustainability, flood risk assessment and others, demonstrating its broad utilization across the entire mining value chain.

The attached document highlights the advanced integration of remote sensing with artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) in key areas such as mineral prospectivity mapping, geological & geophysical interpretation, land cover classification, and flood vulnerability assessment. SRK demonstrated how these technologies are strengthening exploration strategies and environmental risk management. A strategic roadmap was also proposed, recommending that ISRO take the lead in developing a satellite-based support system for mineral exploration and mining in both India and globally. Three recent case studies were showcased:

Mineral Prospectivity Mapping in Southern India: AI/ML techniques were used to combine remote sensing, geophysical, geochemical, and geological data to identify potential gold exploration targets.

Flood Vulnerability Assessment Post-Cyclone Amphan: Remote sensing data supported the identification of flood-prone zones and informed the design of stormwater management strategies.

Alluvial Gold Targeting in Gabon: Spaceborne Digital Elevation Models (such as ALOS PALSAR) were applied to map terrain features and locate areas likely to trap alluvial gold along river channels.

ISRO holds the potential to significantly transform India’s mineral future, spanning discovery, exploration and mine operations. By harnessing satellite-supported exploration and mining intelligence, India can unlock its strategic resource base with greater autonomy, precision, and sustainability.

We extend our sincere thanks to ISRO for the opportunity to present our vision in shaping the country's mineral exploration and mining ecosystem.
