Integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) requirements into mining projects from the exploration phase can significantly enhance project design by mitigating environmental and social risks. Proper timing and integration of ESG aspects at each project stage can optimize plans, schedules, and budgets. Despite the evolving landscape of project staging, technical studies, and ESG requirements, misconceptions persist that ESG is a hindrance to projects. Misalignment between ESG and technical studies can lead to delays, unnecessary liabilities, and social issues.
In some instances, projects have been severely delayed due to a misalignment between technical studies and ESG related reports. With the addition of additional project decision makers and stakeholders, the integration of ESG in technical studies are viewed through different lenses, all of which needs to be identified, understood and dovetailed between the technical and ESG components. This becomes even more complex from a jurisdictional and investment perspective, and the evolving landscape of responsible mining standards. Credible and aligned technical and ESG studies are also now crucial from a geopolitical perspective, especially in the case of Chinese owned mines operating in Africa, with increased pressure from global superpowers for securing critical minerals.
Effective ESG integration requires early involvement of ESG professionals with technical teams to understand the project's ESG context throughout its lifecycle This allows for planning or designing out any potential ESG liabilities that may develop into material financial liabilities during the Life of Mine. Aligning ESG with technical studies can optimize operations, reduce risks, lower costs, and improve timelines. Additionally, proactive ESG management strengthens stakeholder relationships, enhancing operational and geopolitical resilience.
This presentation will explore the overlap between ESG, project development, and technical studies, emphasizing the importance of aligning ESG studies with project timelines. It will cover basic considerations for effective ESG and project development alignment, the role of decision-makers, and the risks involved. Key ESG aspects in project development and technical studies will be highlighted, along with the advantages of alignment. Real-life experiences and geopolitical considerations, particularly in the China-Africa context, will be discussed.
