Since 2011, SRK has provided greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting services to the mining industry, supporting clients in their decarbonisation efforts. To foster sustainability within the company and its service offerings, it began conducting its own GHG accounting to better understand the practical application of GHG accounting principles.
SRK started reporting Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2022, covering fuel use, generators, air conditioning, refrigeration, and office electricity. This established an emission baseline and highlighted data and reduction opportunities. In 2024, Scope 3 accounting was trialled across nine relevant categories; since 2025, it has formed part of the annual GHG inventory.
In establishing SRK’s carbon footprint, challenges familiar to many mining companies were encountered, including issues with data quality, boundary definition, and consistency across diverse operations. In response, the company developed GHG accounting tools to automate data input, apply standardised emission factors, and support alignment with the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064.
Through developing its internal GHG inventory, SRK gained practical experience in emission accounting, factor development, and reporting frameworks. This hands-on experience provided additional insight into the application of these approaches in practice. Development of these internal tools now enables SRK to establish comprehensive inventories for mining projects, processing facilities, logistics, and supply chains, encompassing all emission scopes.
The next step in this journey is SRK’s decarbonisation framework, with emission-reduction targets to guide operations—including transitioning to low-emission vehicles, adopting renewable energy, and embedding sustainability throughout its offices and projects. This will further enhance understanding of the practical considerations associated with implementing emissions-reduction measures and decarbonisation strategies internally, while providing insight into the industry’s own challenges.
Looking ahead, SRK aims to align its corporate and client-focused decarbonisation strategies with international best practices. By integrating sustainability across its activities, the company continues to develop data-driven approaches that reduce emissions, improve efficiency, and advance low-carbon mining alternative solutions.
