Mining has a professional obligation to achieve and maintain a Social License to Operate (SLO), it also has an increasingly legitimate role in the post-2015 Millennium Development Goal framework. The challenge is how to achieve this when the sector‟s priorities of the 21st century are on reducing operating and capital expenditure (opex and capex).
