Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited (RPM), a subsidiary of Valterra Platinum, is applying for an Environmental Authorisation (EA) and Water Use Authorisation (WUA) for the proposed height increase of the slag stockpile facility at the Polokwane Smelter. The footprint of the slag stockpile facility will remain unchanged as part of the proposed height increase; only the height will be raised to minimise potential environmental impacts and support the continued lifespan of the smelter.
Before the height of the existing slag stockpile facility can be increased, RPM requires EA through a Basic Assessment (BA) process and WUA.
SRK Consulting South Africa (Pty) Ltd (SRK) has been appointed as the independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to undertake the BA application process, provide input into a WUA, and carry out the related public participation processes.
The proposed project is located at the Polokwane Smelter, which is approximately 17 km south of Polokwane City on the Burgersfort Road (R37) in Limpopo Province, South Africa. A locality map of the proposed project can be found in the documents below.
Interested and affected parties (I&APs) are invited to register and comment on the Draft Basic Assessment Report (DBAR) that will be available for public comment for 30 days. A soft copy of the DBAR will be made available on this webpage and hard copies of the report will also be available for viewing at the following locations:
