PROJECT SYNOPSIS

Intercement South Africa (Pty) Ltd (NPC) operates a limestone quarry and cement manufacturing plant located at Simuma near Port Shepstone.

NPC intends on upgrading Kiln 1, which entails the following:

  • Replacement of the existing planetary coolers with a grate cooler.
  • Installation of a new electrostatic precipitator (ESP) with associated exhaust fan and stack.

The purpose of the upgrade is to replace obsolete equipment (i.e. the planetary coolers) with the latest technology (grate cooler) which will improve the overall plant efficiency, resulting in an increase in clinker production at Kiln 1 from 1 800 tons per day (t/d) to 2 200 t/d. Clinker production will remain at 4 000 t/d at Kiln 2 and the Simuma cement production rate will also remain unchanged. The upgrade will be undertaken within the existing plant boundary on a brownfield footprint of approximately 750m2.

The proposed upgrade to Kiln 1 is subject to the following:

  • A Basic Assessment (BA) process in terms of Activity 34 of Listing Notice 1 of the NEMA 2014 Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, as amended.
  • An amendment to the following NEM: AQA listed activities in InterCement’s current AEL:
    • Subcategory 5.4: Cement production: the preparation of raw materials, production, and cooling of Portland cement clinker, grinding and blending or clinker to produce finished cement and packaging of finished cement.
    • Subcategory 5.5: Cement production: the production and cooling of Portland cement clinker, grinding and blending of clinker to produce finished cement where alternative fuels and/or resources are used.
