Intercement South Africa (Pty) Ltd (NPC) operates a limestone quarry and cement manufacturing plant located at Simuma near Port Shepstone.
NPC intends on upgrading Kiln 1, which entails the following:
The purpose of the upgrade is to replace obsolete equipment (i.e. the planetary coolers) with the latest technology (grate cooler) which will improve the overall plant efficiency, resulting in an increase in clinker production at Kiln 1 from 1 800 tons per day (t/d) to 2 200 t/d. Clinker production will remain at 4 000 t/d at Kiln 2 and the Simuma cement production rate will also remain unchanged. The upgrade will be undertaken within the existing plant boundary on a brownfield footprint of approximately 750m2.
