Baseline Studies

Environmental, health, and socio-economic baseline studies for Block 2, Siguiri Gold Mine.

We were requested by AngloGold Ashanti Limited (AGA) to undertake the environmental, health, and socio-economic baseline studies for Block 2 at its Siguiri Gold Mine, located in Guinea.

The Siguiri Gold Mine is currently owned and operated by the Societé Ashanti de Guinée (SAG), a Guinean entity and a joint venture between AGA and the Government of Guinea. SAG was granted a mining concession for the prospecting and exploitation of gold, silver, diamonds, and associated minerals in August 1997. Mining activities at Siguiri currently focus on Block 1. Production has increased from 7.86 Mtpa in 2003 to the current production rate of approximately 12 Mtpa. The opportunity to start developing Block 2 is currently being explored.

SRK conducted a selection of specialist baselines studies for AGA, including socio-economic, biodiversity, air quality, geochemistry, groundwater, surface water, health, heritage, noise, and soils. The baseline studies were compiled in accordance with Guinea’s Environmental Code (Code de la Protection et de Lamise en Valeur de l’Environnement) (N°045/PRG/87 and N°022/PRG/89) and good international industry practice (GIIP).

The studies had two key objectives.
• To develop an understanding of baseline environmental and socio-economic conditions (especially in the villages of Saraya and Foulata).
• To prepare high level environmental and socio-economic impact assessments based on proposed activities and operations at Block 2.
