SRK Consulting welcomes Edward Wellman to our Denver office. Edward enhances our expertise with his broad experience in consulting and in providing independent technical reviews of underground geomechanics and open pit slope stability for the mining industry.

Edward has 20 years of geological engineering experience and specializes in caving geomechanics, including rock mass characterization, strength assessment, fragmentation, stress and subsidence analysis, and risk evaluation.  He is an expert in assessing geological hazards and designing ground support and rock reinforcement systems for slopes, underground openings, and tunnels.

He worked extensively on Indonesia’s Grasberg and Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) Block Caves, from pre-feasibility through development, and provided technical expertise on caving to investors in Mongolia’s Oyu Tolgoi project. His work has also taken him much further afield, to the Ares Vallis on Mars.  He was a member of the Mars Pathfinder flight team performing the first soil mechanics experiments on Mars, using a wheeled rover.

Edward has authored and presented technical papers at MassMin conferences in Canada and Sweden. His topics include the geomechanics of the DMLZ and of the Grasberg Pit’s transition from open pit to block cave mining.

“We believe Edward’s applied knowledge of slope stability and geomechanics issues will be a great asset to our Denver practice,” said SRK (U.S.) President Terry Braun, “and will add even more depth to the broad range of mining and geology services we already offer our clients.
