SRK Consulting (Canada) Inc. announces a merger with Oboni Riskope Associates Inc. (Riskope), a Vancouver-based company specializing in quantitative risk assessment.

Riskope uses its Optimum Risk Estimates (ORE) methodology to support companies in their tactical and strategic planning. A typical workflow includes identifying adverse events that could impact a client’s business, quantifying the probability an event will occur along with the impact of the event, and then prioritizing the risks based on the organization’s risk tolerance. By better understanding the risk landscape surrounding a project, companies are able to make decisions that preserve value, enhance continuity, and protect nearby communities.

Being integrated with a larger group of specialists with a global footprint and ancillary resources brings huge value to our clients,” said Dr. Franco Oboni, who, along with his colleague Cesar Oboni, will continue providing services under the SRK Consulting umbrella.

Franco, who has a PhD in geotechnical and civil engineering from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, founded Riskope more than a quarter century ago. In addition to his consulting work, he is passionate about sharing his knowledge through publications, books, courses, and speaking opportunities.

Though Riskope serves a broad range of industries, Cesar Oboni estimates that 75% of the consultancy’s engagements are currently focused on the mining industry, where risks relating to tailings dams and pit slopes are of special concern.

For example, we developed a risk assessment model called ORE2_Tailings™ specifically to address tailings risks,” said Cesar. “This tool is available to be applied more widely through our integration with SRK.”

We have been admiring Riskope’s commitment to extending the capabilities of risk assessment for over two decades”, explained Daryl Hockley, practice leader in SRK Canada. “We finally had the opportunity to work with them over the last five years on several tailings facility risk assessments, and were very impressed with how much they bring to the table. But, this merger is not just about tailings; understanding risk is critical to all of our clients’ projects, so we look forward to Franco and Cesar bringing their broader risk perspective into many other SRK service lines.”
