Grade control is a significant fulcrum of value generation, or value loss, at today's operating mines, directly influencing the operation's economic viability. However, these systems are rarely optimized, commonly considered black-boxes and always underappreciated by their users. The leading grade control technologies and workflows can add tremendous value to an operation if only were understood. This talk will review leading grade control practices against real-world cases of sub-optimal practices. Finally, this presentation will discuss the question of 'what could grade control systems look like in the future?' in the hopes of preparing geologists and mine engineers for what's to come.
