Handling and Interpretation of Large Geotechnical Instrumentation Datasets with SQL and Power BI

Abstract

Instrumentation data management is an increasing challenge in large-scale geotechnical projects due to growing data volumes, diverse instrument types, and varying monitoring frequencies. At the Rainy River Tailings Management Area, data from hundreds of automated and manually monitored instruments are centrally managed within a SQL Server environment administered by Coeur Rainy River.

Automated workflows support data ingestion, processing, quality control, visualization, and alarm notification, reducing manual effort while improving consistency and reliability. Integration with Geographic Information Systems enables real-time monitoring of instrument status, reading schedules, and alarm conditions. For interpretation and reporting, instrumentation data are routinely transferred to Power BI dashboards developed by SRK. This provides timely access to monitoring information through interactive visualizations that support rapid assessment, anomaly detection, and trend analysis. 

This paper describes the data management and visualization workflow used by Coeur and SRK and demonstrates how scalable monitoring systems support early warning, informed decision-making, and effective communication.
