Geotechnical Observations on Barlow-Ojibway Glaciolacustrine Clays and Cochrane Till in Northern Ontario

Abstract

This paper compiles geotechnical observations on Barlow-Ojibway glaciolacustrine clays and Cochrane Till from SRK projects in Northern Ontario (2021–2024), based on 125 CPTu, 290 boreholes, 134 Atterberg determinations, and 22 oedometer tests. 

The Barlow-Ojibway clays are low-plasticity (mean PI = 14%), low-sensitivity (mean St = 3.6) materials of rock-flour mineralogy with low smectite content. The Cochrane Till is distinctly less plastic (PI = 4–5%). The clays are slightly to moderately overconsolidated (mean OCR = 1.7 below 5 m depth). The CPTu-derived normalized strength su/σ'v = 0.37 at OCR = 1.8 matches the prediction combining the PI-dependent ratio of Leroueil et al. (1983) with the SHANSEP exponent of Ladd (1991) within 1%. 

This is the first peer-reviewed application of the SHANSEP framework to Barlow-Ojibway glaciolacustrine clays beyond the Matagami / Olga test-embankment work of Leroueil and colleagues.
