The course develops a logical process to justify rational and balanced choices based on risks from the onset of a project design. The necessary tools are explained and demonstrated using real-world examples of dams and geotechnical structures. The systemic vision is extended to infrastructure portfolios (dikes, linear structures, ports) by showing how a sound prioritization of risks leads to balanced choices that add value, even in the face of increasing uncertainties (public opinion, climate change, etc.). The course also illustrates how quantitative risk assessments can be used in negotiating 'Design Build Operate' contracts and discussions with insurers.
