A First Approach to Eurocode 7 Second Generation for Strength Characterization of Conventional Tailings

Abstract

This work applies the Eurocode 7, Second Generation (EN 1997) methodology to select representative values of residual undrained shear strength to tailings using CPTu data. The study presents a step-by-step process for building the ground model, handling spatial variability, and statistically determining strength parameters relevant to the overall stability ultimate limit state. Results show that the EN 1997 approach produces objective, repeatable parameters aligned with industry practice. The paper also highlights key considerations and areas where substantial engineering judgement is still required.
