Women Taking the Lead

Franciska Lake, Principal Environmental Scientist at SRK Consulting South Africa, was recently profiled by African Women in the Women in Mining Magazine. Franciska speaks to the role of women in the mining industry and what drew her to this field.

I joined SRK Consulting’s water team in 2001, after obtaining a BSc Honours degree in Zoology with a focus on water quality.

Most of my work at SRK, has been in the mining sector, an industry I was familiar with as I had exposure to the industry through my family.

It was not necessarily the mining related work that attracted me to SRK; I was mostly interested in the water and environmental work as I considered SRK to be a pioneer in that field. It was an interesting time to join this field, as South Africa was developing new environmental laws. It has only become more exciting, evolving into the environmental, social and governance (ESG) field that is so critical to business and sustainability today.
