Senior Mechanical Engineer (Mining)

A vacancy for a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Mining) has become available in the Geology and Mining (GEOMIN) Business Unit at SRK Consulting’s Johannesburg office. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates.

Job Description:
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for and involved in planning, managing and executing projects related to mining mechanical infrastructure and engineering, project review, capital cost assessment and estimation for mainly underground mining projects.  Such project work will include:

  • Providing engineering design and cost input into feasibility studies from scoping level to AACE Class 3 bankable feasibility level;
  • Compiling manpower, operating and capital cost estimates and cash flows for feasibility studies and trade-off studies;
  • Undertaking due diligence and reviews on the infrastructure, engineering and capital aspects of mining projects;
  • Project construction planning and scheduling from scoping level to AACE Class 3 bankable feasibility level;
  • Supervision of the production of engineering drawings for projects at the appropriate level of detail, depending on the project;
  • Review project execution and implementation plans;
  • Providing professional advice to the project teams.
 
The role will involve work on a national and international level encompassing the following: proposal writing; work planning, budgeting, and execution; data analysis; technical reporting; liaison with other local and international SRK consultants; client liaison; internal and external resourcing (e.g. contractors); logistics planning; and budgeting and quality assurance.


Qualifications and Skills:
 
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:
  • A BSc or BEng qualification in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
  • Progress toward achieving Pr Eng or Pr Tech Eng qualification.
  • A minimum of 6 years’ experience as a mine engineer on an underground mine with knowledge of operation, maintenance, and construction of shafts.
  • A South African Government Mine Engineer’s Certificate of Competency, or equivalent, will be advantageous.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a consultant (would be preferred).
  • Experience in economic assessments (would be advantageous).
  • Proficiency in English (additional languages will be an added advantage).
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and passport as well as own transport.
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD and the MS Project Scheduler will be advantageous.
  • Be able to travel internationally on projects.
  • Strong report writing and verbal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to prioritise, multi-task and meet project deadlines.
