Paper Abstract
Effective management of mine waste and tailings is crucial for sustainable mining practices. This paper explores the significance of early-stage geochemical characterization in mitigating environmental risks and optimizing operational efficiency and mine valuation through mine waste management. The latter may include the implementation of innovative disposal methods, such as engineered covers or in-situ stabilization techniques, to mitigate the release of contaminants into the environment.
Emphasizing the proactive role of geochemical data in decision-making processes, the paper highlights the significance of conducting comprehensive geochemical assessments during the initial stages of mining projects.
The integration of Brazilian regulatory framework and international standards, including GARD, and MEND guidelines, provides a comprehensive framework for mine waste management. Case studies such as the Alpha and Beta projects underscore the economic and environmental benefits (or conversely the major risks) of early-stage geochemical characterization, highlighting its role in reducing uncertainties and minimizing negative impacts on the environment and the project long term economy.
By investing in quality data collection and analysis upfront, mining companies can enhance environmental stewardship and ensure the long-term sustainability of mining operations, while raising the project valuation.
